Backgrounder: National Institute of Health Policy

The National Institute of Health Policy (NIHP) is a neutral forum and source of policy analysis and discourse for diverse health care stakeholders from throughout the Upper Midwest. The organization’s multi-stakeholder membership represents all facets of the health care industry including health systems, hospitals, universities, corporations, employees, and professional trade associations. These innovative health care leaders collaborate to shape health care policy and stay informed on national, regional and local health care financing and delivery issues.

The NIHP facilitates a variety of policy-related activities, including:

  • Health care policy analysis and research synthesis
  • Non-partisan, neutral forums for dialogue and development of collective policy platforms and solutions to health care financing and delivery issues
  • Public outreach and education related to national and local health policy and its impact on the Upper Midwest region

The NIHP was established in 1998 through a unique partnership of the University of St. Thomas (UST) and the University of Minnesota, and is now a program of the UST College of Business. Founded by former U.S. Senator David Durenberger (R-MN, 1978-1995), NIHP’s 37 members come from Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana.
